The End of 2G: What Access Control Professionals Need to Anticipate

For more than 30 years, 2G has connected millions of devices, including alarms, elevators, remote meter reading systems, access control systems, and automation systems. Mobile operators are now phasing out 2G to make way for 4G and 5G networks, which are more powerful and better suited to today’s uses.

Why is 2G being phased out?

Maintaining an older mobile network is costly. The freed-up spectrum will make it possible to improve the performance of current networks and further expand the use of connected devices.

What equipment is affected?

Access control systems that still use a 2G GSM module will need to be replaced or upgraded in order to continue communicating once the network is permanently shut down.

Why plan ahead?

Being proactive helps prevent breakdowns, allows you to plan replacements with confidence, and enables you to offer your customers long-lasting installations.

Why switch to 4G?

4G offers greater reliability and longer battery life, and allows users to enjoy more advanced connected services.
