What is a radio bridge?

A radio bridge is a wireless communication device. Its function is to pass information from one point to another, hence the term "bridge". To do this, radio signals are transmitted from one point to the other over varying distances, sometimes reaching several kilometers depending on the power of the transmitter. This technology is the most recommended for managing automated systems.

In the automation sector, radio bridges are used to link transmitters to motorization systems for electric access gates to private homes or industrial sites.

When should a radio bridge be used?

This technology is particularly useful for managing motorized devices that block access to a site's courtyard or parking lot: sliding gates, swing gates, garage doors, wicket doors, roller shutters...

It should be noted that these operators must systematically be accompanied by flashing LED indicators to warn of motorized opening in progress, in order to avoid any accidents.

Our guide to radio bridges in general

There are several variants of this technology. To help you choose the best solution forautomating your equipment, find out more about the properties of each of them.

Short-range radio bridges

This is the preferred technology for automatic systems. It is used to pair transmitters (automatic sensors or badge readers) with receivers connected to a central system on a local network. If you're looking for a way to control automatic doors or gates remotely, the range of this technology (between 1km and 5km) is more than sufficient, and radio signals are generally encrypted to prevent hacking.

Point-to-point radio bridges

It's a two-part system (two devices, both transmitters and receivers) that communicate with each other in a closed fashion. It is ideal for direct connections between two devices.

Point-to-multipoint radio bridges

It's a network of points (all transmitters and receivers) linked by a central point. This central point can send and receive information from any other point, and acts as an intermediary between several secondary points. A wireless network like this is the best way to control home automation or a network of gates.

Here is an example of its use:

- You identify yourself by swiping an electronic card at a dedicated terminal;

- A radio signal is sent from this terminal to the central system;

- The central system's radio receiver receives the request;

- If access is authorized, the central system will send another radio signal to another point (an automatic device);

- When the electric motor box receives the command, it opens automatic gates or parking lot entrance barriers.

The access request can also be sent using a remote control, or via an intercom, which also use a radio bridge to communicate.

The benefits of a radio bridge for comfort and safety

The role of a radio bridge in site security is crucial, whether it's a residence, a company parking lot or an industrial site. It ensures fast, efficient operation of equipment, saving time and comfort for users of your private property.

It's also a strategic solution that spares you the costly installation of buried or suspended cables, which can degrade and pose a risk in the event of malfunction or sabotage.

What's more, this type of wireless technology uses radio waves to detect the presence of a vehicle or person on the gate's sliding track. The mechanism will then stop automatically, to prevent any incident.
