WHAT TYPES OF ACCESS CONTROL READER ARE THERE?

In a world where security has become a priority, access control remains an essential element in protecting goods and people. Access control readers play a crucial role in this process, as they determine who can enter secure areas, and under what conditions. However, there is a wide variety of technologies and methods available, which can make the choice difficult... In this article, we'll explain the different types of access control readers, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs and expectations!

What is a reader?

In terms of access control, a reader is an electronic device used toauthenticate users wishing to access a secure area.

Its main role is to read information recorded on a badge, card or other type of identification medium, usually using technologies such as RFID or NFC. Once the code or identifier has been read, the reader transmits this data to the access control unit, which evaluates the associated access rights. Based on this assessment, the control unit authorizes or denies access to the person or vehicle. Thanks to this function, the reader helps to enhance facility security by ensuring precise, efficient control of entries and exits.

The different types of access control reader

When it comes to securing a residential or industrial space, access control readers play an important role. Each of these devices offers unique features tailored to different security needs. Find out more below!

Proximity reader (badge reader)

The proximity reader, often known as a badge reader, is one of the most commonly used systems for access control. It works by reading information stored on an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) or NFC (Near Field Communication) badge. This type of reader is appreciated for its ease of use and reliability in a variety of environments. There are 2 communication protocols between the badge and the reader: 125Khz (the best-known) and MIFARE (the most secure). Ex: LPROX in 125Khz and LPROX-MF (MIFARE).

Code keypad

The keypad is a popular alternative to the badge reader. Placed at the entrance to a secure site, it allows users to enter a digital PIN code to gain access to a restricted area. This method is often chosen for its simplicity and ability to manage a large number of users without the need for physical cards. Ex: EASYBKW (wired) or RADIOKEYD+ (radio)

UHF reader

The UHF reader uses Ultra High Frequency technology to detect and identify RFID tags from a greater distance than standard proximity readers. This type of reader is ideal for environments requiring remote reading, such as parking lots, large warehouses and toll booths. Its ability to process large numbers of tags quickly makes it an effective solution for access control in large spaces. Ex : MEGAPROX8

Other types of player

There are also other types of access control reader. Here are a few examples:

- Biometric readers use unique characteristics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, to guarantee secure access. They are less widely used, as they require a very strict protocol with regard to the CNIL.

- Magnetic card readers, although less common today, read information stored on a magnetic strip, while barcode readers are often used in inventory management environments.

- Active RFID readers enable remote reading using battery-powered tags. What's more, some modern systems incorporate mobile readers, enabling smartphones to act as access devices via NFC or Bluetooth.

- Multifunctional readers combine several technologies, offering greater flexibility and security.

These different options enable you to choose the access control system best suited to your specific needs and application environment.
